Garden Lighting

Ground spike light fittings are available in a wide and varied range. From a simple old fashioned single spike with a Par 38 bulb (above left) to a smaller halogen version, stainless steel small lamppost types and more recently solar powered lights.

Ground spike light fittings are wired in steel armoured cable under the ground to each lighting point in the garden. The fitting is then stabbed into the ground/flower bed and the light angled towards the appropriate area to be lit up.

External Lighting

For convenience or decoration, there are plenty of choices when it comes to external wall lighting.

Below are wall mountable versions of the garden spike fittings. These are available in single or twin and use the same Par 38 spotlight as the spike version. The arms can be angled so that the bulb points in the desired direction.

Old fashioned carriage lights are also a popular choice for lighting walkways particularly a front path. A carriage light (either on an arm or flat to the wall) would commonly be mounted beside the front door either with a PIR sensor as a courtesy light for someone approaching, or just to keep the front area of the house lit in the dark. A manual switch can be fitted inside the house to allow the user to turn the light on or off to his/her own desire.

Brick lights are another alternative for a decorative external light. Simply, the brick light replaces a standard house brick. These lights are available with standard incandescent bulbs in either a plain or louvered style. They also come in an LED version and in a variety of colours. As with the other LED lights listed, the lifespan is far greater than incandescent types and would not necessitate the changing of a bulb, which would obviously prove particularly inconvenient for this type of application.

Security Lighting

Security lighting is a very important deterrent for your home and in addition to the standard halogen floodlights commonly seen on external walls of houses, there are other alternatives available in the form of sodium fittings and brightest of all metal halide lights. The halogen type can be found in mini (150 watts maximum) and large (500 watts maximum).

The mini floodlights tend to be used to light up a small garden, side path or garage area at the front or rear of a property, whereas the large floodlights are used more for larger gardens, double fronted houses and driveways.

Metal halide fittings are similar in appearance to halogen floodlights, the difference being that the bulb is much more powerful and uses less electricity. Sodium bulbs are commonly found in street lighting and lampposts and are used on large properties with big areas to light up, or where there isn’t a lot of lighting in the vicinity. As the bulbs are sodium based the wattage used is generally 70 watts but gives a much brighter light.

Metal Halide lights are used mainly for lighting very large areas like communal parking/garage areas but are also useful if you want to enhance a particular feature of the garden i.e. a large tree, as the bulbs are available in a variety of different colours and give a very pleasant look to what would otherwise be a very plain looking part of the garden.
