Decorative LED Lighting

Low voltage lighting is very common in the home and garden, and LED’s inparticular are the fastest growing means of providing energy efficient lighting. The pictures show an installation of LED lighting fitted into tiling in a kitchen just above the counter top.

LED fittings are housed in a sealed waterproof surround meaning they are suitable for installation near water and steam i.e. in a kitchen or bathroom. LED’s also have a lifespan of up to 100,000 hours, 100 times more than a standard lightbulb.

LED’s are Light Emitting Diodes and not filament based like light bulbs meaning they produce light when electricity is supplied to them and whereas light bulbs need changing regularly LED’s do not, and will continue producing a bright light for many years.

Under Counter Lighting

Under Counter lighting is available in many different forms. The most popular being fluorescent T5 energy saving tubes or link lights as they are commonly known. Link lights are popular as they come in different lengths and can be seamlessly joined together.

This means that they are suitable for all applications. All that’s required is the full measurement of the cupboards and the correct selection of link lights can then be installed to fit the length of the run.

They can also be installed individually under single or smaller cupboard runs, and link leads are available to bridge the gap between two sets of cupboards that are separated by an oven, fridge etc. but still need to be operated by the same light switch so that the lights all come on at the same time.

Link lights are now becoming available in LED form. As with the LED lighting above in the kitchen tiling, these lights give a bright white light and last for up to 100,000 hours meaning there is no worrying about sourcing fluorescent tubes every time you need a new one. There are many different sizes of fluorescent tube out there and in many cases it is almost impossible to find the exact size meaning that the fitting itself will need changing.

Other under counter lighting are low voltage halogen down lights (as shown) which can be either recessed into the cupboard base or surface mounted. Older style strip lights (similar to the type you would find over a bathroom mirror or picture frame) are still common although they are not a popular installation request nowadays due to the lack of an energy saving alternative.

Ceiling Lighting

There are two very popular styles of ceiling lighting for the kitchen. Low voltage halogen down lights installed as above provide a clean crisp white light giving a suitable lighting condition for working and cooking under. These lights are installed in rows of equal numbers of fittings and evenly distribute the light across the kitchen. The bulb itself has a flood style beam which spreads the light nicely into the next bulb along in the row.

Halogen bars or plates are also a common request in a kitchen as they give a similar bright light but are only a single central fitting rather than being spread across the ceiling. Older spotlight styles are still available in either a 3 light circular plate or 2/3 light bar type. These fittings use incandescent spotlights as opposed to halogens and are also found in a recessed form in older kitchens.

Many people nowadays are opting to move away from the incandescent spotlights and are having halogen fittings installed. The older style recessed spotlights can be easily converted into halogen down lights by fitting a conversion plate over the existing larger hole in the ceiling. The plate has a hole the size of a halogen spotlight in the middle which then simply requires a lamp holder and transformer to be fitted above the ceiling to complete the conversion.

Also available are mains powered halogen down lights which, although they don’t require a transformer, produce a more yellow light as opposed to the crisp white light from a low voltage down light. The mains powered lights however can be purchased in an energy saving variety in either standard colour or a daylight option which as the name states, mimics daylight and has become very popular recently.
